Beyond The Wheel

Ep. 82 Family Motor Coach Association (FMCA)

Family Motor Coach Association

If you are an RVer, then the name FMCA, also known as the Family Motor Coach Association, is familiar. But maybe you don’t know all of the benefits of being a member. Chris Smith, CEO of FMCA, joined us to talk about the history of FMCA, including changes made throughout the years. It is now open to all RVers, towables and motorhomes alike. During the interview, Chris said, “The unit doesn’t matter, the people do.”

FMCA

The FMCA started with twenty-six families and has now grown to over seventy-five thousand members. Offering online education, discounts, rallies, groups/chapters to join, a monthly magazine, and more. One of the things that really caught our attention is their truly unlimited data plan. FMCA teamed up with Sprint to offer a data plan that has no throttling. If you are an RVer, you know that is a big deal.

We also learned that the FMCA is a nonprofit, which helps keep the cost of things down. This includes the cost of such as the data plan just mentioned and the in-person driving courses designed to help motorhome drivers as well as towables.

FMCAssist

“I think one of the unique things that we offer as part of the dues is a benefit we call FMCAssist. Once you’re a member, you are automatically enrolled. It’s not an insurance policy. It is a medical evacuation repatriation policy. Let’s say you’re in the middle of nowhere and you have a heart attack. You are taken to the local hospital, but it is not equipped to care for you and you need to be airlifted to the next closest hospital. FMCAssist pays for the transportation. If you are unfortunately unable to drive, we’ll take care of you and get your RV home. It is more of a peace of mind benefit. I would say it’s not a well-known policy, but the nice thing is if you go and get that policy on your own, it would be $200. So, for $50 to renew $60 to join, that alone pays for itself.” – Chris Smith, CEO of FMCA.
