Beyond The Wheel

Ep. 73 Care Camps

Care Camps

Today’s episode could be our most important episode yet! We have Jennifer Mercer, Director of Development for Care Camps, joining us to tell us all about the wonderful things they do for children with cancer. The organization was founded 36 years ago by a small group of KOA campground owners. They wanted to help children with cancer go camping, forget about their problems for a while, and focus on being kids. The foundation was recognized by KOA corporate, which is now the most prominent supporter of the charity.

“Because of KOA, when you donate to care camps, 100% of your donation goes directly to helping a child with cancer to send them to camp.” – Jennifer Mercer, Director of Development.

You don’t have to be as big as KOA to help. There are several ways to help send kids to camp even without spending any money. Of course, donations always help, and you can see all the different ways to donate here.

Care Camps

Jennifer shares the difference between a standard campground and a Care Camp campground and how much it costs to send a child with cancer to camp for a week. Because of generous donations, they can send 42,000 kids to camp a year.

“Parents talk about sending a patient to camp and their child back”-Jennifer Mercer, Director of Development.

Care Camps and COVID

She also tells us how Covid-19 was challenging for the kids. Because of the shutdown, they were not able to go camping. Luckily, they pulled together and came up with a way to bring camp to the kids, with an idea called camp in a box. They would send a camp kit in a large box through mail to the children. This way, whether kids were in a hospital or at home, they could experience the fun of camp anywhere.

If you have a child with cancer or know someone who does and would like them to go to Care Camps, reach out to Jennifer.

We hope you enjoyed this episode and found it as heartwarming as we did. Kenny and Sean plan on doing some fundraisers in the future so be sure to look out for that. In the meanwhile, we hope that you will visit Care Camps and learn more about this fantastic foundation.
